On Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., Honour for Heroes will host a deeply moving memorial ceremony at the American Legion Post 14 in Anderson, South Carolina, honouring Private Curtis Adams and the Wereth 11. Associazione Benàch is sharing this story because it resonates with our mission and our hearts. In our work researching and commemorating the Lost Mountaineers at Lake Garda, we encountered a story of 25 soldiers who tragically drowned in 1945. Like the Wereth 11, these men were part of a field artillery unit and faced extraordinary danger. Remarkably, both events involve men from Anderson, South Carolina — including SGT James Hilley in Lake Garda and PVT Curtis Adams in Wereth — connecting these distant battlefields and moments in history in a profoundly human way. Private Adams, a medic and son of Anderson, was one of eleven Black soldiers of the 333rd Field Artillery Battalion who became separated from their unit during the early hours of the Battle of the Bulge in 1945. Captured by German SS troops, they were brutally tortured and murdered, their bodies left in a Belgian field for months. Their courage and sacrifice, though often overlooked, deserve to be remembered and shared. This memorial is not just about honoring a single hero — it is about preserving the stories of all those who risked everything for others. It is about recognising the human face behind the history, the lives lived with courage, the families who waited, and the communities whose memory keeps them alive. By sharing this event, Associazione Benàch hopes to inspire reflection, remembrance, and action. It serves as a reminder that history is a thread connecting people, places, and generations, and that the stories of valour, sacrifice, and brotherhood should never be forgotten. The ceremony is free and open to the public, featuring a Quilting Ceremony honoring veteran Cecil Johnson, with light refreshments afterwards. Honor for Heroes will also provide coffee, tea, and donuts to all veterans from 6:00 to 10:30 AM. Date: Tuesday, November 11, 2025 Time: 11:00 AM Location: American Legion – Post 14, 1301 E. Greenville St., Anderson, SC Admission: Free We invite everyone reading this to share this story and this blog, to help ensure that the bravery of Private Curtis Adams, the Wereth 11, and the Lost Mountaineers at Lake Garda is never forgotten. By honoring these stories, we honor humanity itself — across continents, generations, and communities. Learn more about Honor for Heroes at www.honor4heroes.com.
